Why the home setting can help

The physiotherapist can assess the actual chair, bed, stairs and walking routes the patient uses every day. Exercises can be built around meaningful activities such as standing up, reaching safely, moving between rooms or using a walking aid. This makes advice easier to apply than a generic routine.

Common goals for older adults

Goals may include improving leg strength, steadiness, walking tolerance, joint mobility, bed mobility and confidence after a fall or hospital stay. The therapist may also teach a caregiver how to supervise practice safely. Treatment must account for fatigue, pain, blood pressure concerns, cognition and other medical conditions.

Can physiotherapy prevent every fall?

No service can promise that falls will never occur. Physiotherapy can identify some modifiable risks and work on strength, balance and movement strategies, but vision, medicines, footwear, home hazards and medical conditions may also affect fall risk. A broader medical or occupational assessment may be needed.

When should a doctor be involved?

New confusion, fainting, sudden weakness, chest symptoms, a fall with suspected fracture, rapidly worsening walking or unexplained repeated falls require medical attention. Physiotherapy can work alongside medical care when the patient is stable and appropriate precautions are known.
