Clinical note: This guide is general education and does not replace individual medical assessment.
Before the first home session
Keep the discharge summary, investigation reports, surgery precautions, medication list and treating doctor instructions available. Tell the therapist about falls, dizziness, breathing symptoms, wound concerns and the assistance currently needed.
What the first assessment may cover
The home physiotherapist may review pain, movement, strength, transfers, walking, balance, stairs and daily activities as relevant. The initial plan should respect weight-bearing restrictions, medical precautions and fatigue.
Make the home ready
Clear the route between bed, bathroom and main sitting area. Use stable chairs and adequate lighting. Do not buy walking aids solely from online advice; correct height and technique should be checked by an appropriate clinician.
Set functional goals
Goals such as reaching the bathroom safely, standing from a chair, walking indoors or managing steps are more useful than vague promises of fast recovery. Progress depends on diagnosis, health status, practice and response to treatment.
Frequently asked questions
Requirements vary. Recent surgery, complex illness or medical precautions should be discussed with the treating doctor and physiotherapist.
Some discomfort can occur, but severe, sudden or worsening symptoms should be reported to the medical team.
