Independent patient selection guide

How to choose a sports physiotherapist

Choose a sports physiotherapist using injury assessment, strength testing, workload progression and return-to-sport planning criteria.

Important: “Best” means the most suitable qualified professional for the patient’s condition and goals. It is not a guaranteed ranking or treatment outcome.

Sports goals need more than pain relief

A sports rehabilitation plan should consider the movements, speed, strength and workload required by the activity. Feeling less pain does not always mean the person is ready for full training.

Look for structured assessment

The therapist may assess range of motion, strength, balance, control and sport-related tasks as appropriate. A suspected fracture, significant instability, concussion or severe swelling may need medical investigation.

Progressive loading matters

Recovery usually moves from protected activity to strength, control, running or agility tasks when appropriate. Progress should reflect symptoms, tissue healing, confidence and performance rather than an arbitrary date.

Ask about return criteria

Useful criteria may include side-to-side strength, hopping or landing quality, running tolerance and response after training. The exact tests depend on the injury and sport.

Home versus clinic sports rehab

Early exercise and general strength work may sometimes occur at home. Later testing or equipment needs may make a clinic or training environment more suitable. The therapist should explain the trade-off.

Questions patients ask

Does a sports therapist treat only athletes?

Sports physiotherapy principles can help active people too, but the plan should match the individual’s activity and condition.

Can a sports physiotherapist guarantee return to play?

No. Return depends on diagnosis, healing, rehabilitation progress, medical advice and sport demands.
