Why falls need attention
A fall is not always simply part of ageing. Reduced strength, poor balance, vision problems, medicines, foot pain, unsafe footwear and environmental hazards can combine. Repeated falls, dizziness, fainting or a sudden change in walking require medical assessment.
What a home physiotherapist assesses
An elderly mobility therapist may review transfers, standing balance, gait, turning, stair use and the way a person reaches or carries objects. The assessment can also identify loose rugs, low lighting, unsuitable chair heights and missing hand support. Treatment should be personalized rather than a generic exercise list.
A safer daily routine
Use stable footwear, keep frequently used routes clear, rise slowly, and place everyday items within comfortable reach. Prescribed strength and balance exercises need the correct level of support. Family members should learn how to assist without pulling the patient or creating dependence.
How progress is measured
Useful goals include standing from a chair with less assistance, walking a defined indoor distance, turning safely and improving confidence. The physiotherapist can adjust exercise difficulty while monitoring fatigue, pain and safety.
Frequently asked questions
No. Physiotherapy can address modifiable movement risks, but no service can guarantee that a fall will never happen.
Seek urgent help for head injury, severe pain, deformity, inability to bear weight, loss of consciousness or new confusion.
